Hungary

Hungary has a real, published national scholarship for student athletes - 60,000 to 160,000 HUF a month for six months a semester - but every category requires membership of a Hungarian national squad, so it is closed to a foreign player.

Marginal — Dual-career support, not money

How it works

The Magyar Sportcsillagok Osztondijprogram (Hungarian Sport Stars Scholarship Programme) is run by the State Secretariat for Sport within the Ministry of Defence (Honvedelmi Miniszterium), with the Hungarian Olympic Committee, the Paralympic Committee, the National Sport Development Institute (NSMI) and MEFS (the university sports federation) helping to publicise it. The published conditions must all be met together: not yet 35 years of age; active student status in a bachelor's, master's, undivided or higher-vocational programme at a Hungarian higher education institution listed in Annex 1 of the National Higher Education Act; active club membership in a sport in the Olympic or Paralympic competition system; membership of an adult or age-group Hungarian national squad ('felnott vagy korosztalyos magyar nemzeti valogatott keretben valo tagsag') in an Olympic or Paralympic event; and no pending sports-disciplinary or anti-doping proceedings and no final ban. The athlete does not apply directly: the national federation's board (or the Paralympic Committee) resolves to nominate her and evidences the qualifying result; the State Secretariat obtains confirmation of active student status from the Education Authority (Oktatasi Hivatal); an advisory council including MOB, MPB, NSMI and MEFS makes the final recommendation; and the minister responsible for sports policy decides, taking account of the funds available. The Ministry of Defence pays the athlete directly. Basketball, including 3x3, is an Olympic sport and so falls within scope. Separately there is the Gerevich Aladar state sport scholarship distributed through the federations, which the call expressly says may be paid alongside the Sport Stars scholarship.

What it is worth

For the 2025/2026 autumn semester, per the official call: Category I (1st-3rd at the Olympics/Paralympics or a senior World Championship in an Olympic/Paralympic event, or 1st at a senior European Championship in such an event) 160,000 HUF/month, paid for 6 months aligned to the academic semester; Category II (athletes whose results do not reach Category I, or who placed 1st-3rd at an age-group World or European Championship, and who also receive the federation Gerevich Aladar sport scholarship) 120,000 HUF/month for 6 months; Category III (national-squad members whose results do not reach Categories I or II and who do not receive the Gerevich Aladar scholarship but whom the federation or MPB board considers deserving, or squad members placing 1st-3rd at the Winter or Summer World University Games) 60,000-80,000 HUF/month for 6 months, with the federation proposing the exact sum. Category placement is decided on results at up to two world sporting events held within the four years immediately before nomination. This is a living-cost top-up, not tuition: at roughly 400 EUR a month at the top band it does not by itself fund a student, and Hungarian state-funded study places are decided separately on academic grounds.

The formal limits

Age: the 35th birthday must not have been reached. Supported semesters are capped: higher-vocational training period plus at most 1 semester; a first bachelor's degree plus at most 2 semesters; at most 10 supported semesters in total for a student moving from higher-vocational to bachelor's; at most 12 for a student moving from bachelor's to master's; 12 for an undivided programme. Semesters supported in earlier rounds count toward those totals. Holding more than one medal within a category does not increase the amount. A passive semester invalidates the nomination; retroactive passivation triggers repayment; ending student status ends the scholarship. There is no possibility of supplementing a deficient file and no discretionary leniency in the nomination, assessment or decision process. The scope is limited to Olympic and Paralympic sports and events.

Can an international athlete get it?

No, not to this scholarship. The call requires membership of a Hungarian national squad, which a Spanish or other foreign player cannot hold, and nomination runs through the Hungarian federation's board. What is open to an international student in Hungary is the academic route: Stipendium Hungaricum, the state scholarship for international students, which for the 2024/2025 academic year covered tuition in full, paid 43,700 HUF/month (about 110 EUR) to non-degree, bachelor's, master's, one-tier master's and postgraduate specialist students, provided a free dormitory place or a 40,000 HUF/month accommodation contribution, and gave Hungarian health care plus supplementary medical cover up to 65,000 HUF/year. Stipendium Hungaricum is awarded on academic merit through bilateral country calls, not on sporting ability, and the programme itself states it is only a contribution to living expenses. Beyond that, a foreign player's route to money in Hungary is a professional contract with a club, not a university.

Worth knowing

Sport in Hungary sits under the Ministry of Defence's State Secretariat for Sport; the scholarship call is issued and the money paid by the Ministry of Defence, which surprises families expecting an education ministry programme.
Amounts and categories are set semester by semester in each call. The figures above are from the 2025/2026 autumn semester call (documents dated 15 September 2025) and can change.
Nomination is by the national federation with a hard postal deadline - 3 October 2025 for that round - and the paper submission is the official one. There is no appeal and no chance to complete a deficient file.
The scholarship may be paid alongside the Gerevich Aladar sport scholarship, so published Sport Stars figures understate what a top Hungarian international actually receives.
Rating note: Hungary meets the 'formalised national framework with published caps' limb of the maturity scale, but it fails the limb about university sport being a significant pathway - the money follows national-squad selection and the federation nominates, not the university. It sits at the bottom of band 3 for that reason.

What we could not confirm

Whether a newer Sport Stars call exists for the 2025/2026 spring semester or the 2026/2027 year. The kormany.hu document library page we checked lists only the 2025/2026 autumn round, so the amounts quoted are the most recent we could verify, not necessarily the current ones.
Current Stipendium Hungaricum provisions. The equivalent page for 2025/2026 returned 404 and the programme's own scholarship page does not restate the amounts, so the figures above are 2024/2025 values and may have moved.
How many basketball players, and how many women, actually receive the Sport Stars scholarship each semester - the call publishes no sport-by-sport allocation.
Current Gerevich Aladar scholarship values. Distribution is points-based through each federation and we verified no forint figure from an official source.
Whether any individual Hungarian university pays its own sports scholarship to a non-Hungarian student, and on what terms - we verified nothing at institution level.
