The route Esmery Martínez took into university basketball

Forward

Athlavia had no involvement with Esmery Martínez. She has not used this product, is not connected to it and has not endorsed it. Everything on this page about her is drawn from the published sources listed at the foot, and cited so you can read the originals. The sentences about what an association’s rules permit are ours; they are statements about a rulebook, they are marked as such where they appear, and they are not about her.

No photograph. Roster images belong to the universities and photographers who made them.

The route Esmery Martínez took, drawn as the levels she played at, in the order her sources place them.
Before university: Dominican Republic. Her sources describe this in words, not as a level.
Stop 1: West Virginia University, NCAA Division I.
Stop 2: University of Arizona, NCAA Division I.

Two stops, both NCAA Division I. The line is flat because the level did not change, not because nothing happened. 14 of the 108 women documented here followed the same sequence of levels.

Left to right is the order the sources place her stops in. It is not a time axis: 54 of the 181 stops recorded across this site carry a bare pair of dates and the rest are prose, so the years are printed as written, in the list below.

The rows are the NCAA’s own three divisions, plus two dashed rows for everything outside them. NAIA and U SPORTS are separate associations rather than a lower NCAA tier, and nothing in these records ranks them against it; the two-year colleges sit at the foot because a junior college is an institution players transfer on from, which the records do say. The shaded bar behind each row is how many of the 110 routes documented here include a stop at that level.

The stops, as the sources record them

Printed as written. The drawing above compresses these; this list does not, because every caveat in the research lives inside these sentences.

What these levels are, and what money can exist at them

These are facts about rulebooks. They apply to everyone at that level, and none of them is a statement about her.

NCAA Division I

This association permits athletic scholarships. Whether any particular player received one, and how much of one, is not published.

What the rules actually say at NCAA Division I

Where she was before she left

Born in Hato Mayor del Rey, Dominican Republic. Attended Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

What happened, in the sources’ account

Martínez moved from the Dominican Republic to a US Christian academy, then to West Virginia in the Big 12, then to Arizona in the Pac-12. In 2024 she was selected 17th overall, in the second round, by the New York Liberty, becoming the first Dominican-born player selected in the WNBA draft.

What is known about money

Athletic scholarships are permitted at every level on this route. That is a fact about the rulebook, not about her.

No source we fetched states what she received, if anything.

6 of the 110 routes documented here have a source stating any financial term at all. The other 104 do not, and that is normal rather than a gap in the research: a university announces a signing as a roster addition, and what a player was offered stays between her and the programme. Read silence as silence.

What our researchers found about money

No source states anything about money.

Copied without editing. Like the checking notes further down, some of these sentences are instructions to the person writing this page rather than statements about her.

The source we read states nothing about a scholarship, an amount, or any financial arrangement.

What happened since

Selected 17th overall in the second round of the 2024 WNBA draft by the New York Liberty — the first Dominican-born player drafted. Signed a training camp contract with the Liberty in February 2025 and left French club Flammes Carolo Basket in April 2025. Represents the Dominican Republic; competed at the 2018 FIBA Caribbean Women's Championship and made her senior debut at the 2023 FIBA Women's AmeriCup.

No retrieval date is stored against these sources, so treat anything time-sensitive — a current club, a current roster — as needing a fresh check.

Athlavia’s note on this route

Everything above is drawn from the sources. This is our editorial judgement about why the route is worth showing, and it is the only opinion on this page.

Include her as a recognition name for the Caribbean — but the honest framing is that she is the exception, not the template. Her published record also shows the prep-academy step that many families overlook: she did not go straight from a Dominican club to a Big 12 university.

She is an outlier. Read her next to the junior-college and Division II routes rather than as the benchmark.

This set has not been through the balancing pass, so it may over-represent Division I.

What we could not confirm

These are the checking pass’s own notes, copied without editing. They address the person writing this page, which is why some are phrased as instructions. They are published because a list of what we removed is worth more than an assurance that we checked.

What the second pass removed or corrected

  • CORRECTED: the prior draft said she 'plays for Flammes Carolo Basket in France'. The same Wikipedia page says she LEFT that club in April 2025. Do not state a current club — her present team is unknown to us.
  • CORRECTED: the prior draft said she debuted internationally at the 2018 FIBA Caribbean Women's Championship. Wikipedia gives her SENIOR debut as the 2023 FIBA Women's AmeriCup, with the 2018 Caribbean championship earlier. Phrase it as written above.
  • CORRECTED: the prior draft cited high-school averages of 18.3 points, 14.3 rebounds and 5.9 blocks per game. We did not verify those in anything we loaded. Removed.

What is still unknown

  • SINGLE SOURCE (Wikipedia). We attempted to corroborate against the Arizona athletics roster; that URL resolves to the current-season roster, which no longer includes her, so it is not cited. Corroborate the draft position and the conference years against WNBA and university sources before publishing.
  • She is an active professional; her situation may have changed since the source was last updated.
  • As a recognition name she risks doing exactly what this page is meant to counter. If used, place her alongside the Division II and junior-college examples, never as the headline.

Researcher’s own rating: 68 out of 100. This is the checking agent’s self-assessment, not a measurement. Across the 110 records it runs from 62 to 93, so the source count above it tells you more.

Athlavia had no involvement with Esmery Martínez. We did not advise, represent or place her, and we do not know her.

This page describes a public sporting record: where she played, at what level, and what published sources say about that. It carries no photograph, no date of birth and no contact details, and we do not report anything about her health beyond what her own sources state and what the route requires.

If you are Esmery Martínez, or represent her, and want anything here corrected or this page removed, write to support@athlavia.com and we will act on it.
