Poland
There is no athletic scholarship in the American sense; the realistic money is the rector's merit scholarship, where sport is one of several qualifying grounds - the University of Warsaw pays 1,200 PLN a month for nine months in 2025/2026 - and international students may apply on the same terms as Poles.

How it works
Two separate systems, and only one of them is a university scholarship. (1) University aid: Art. 91 of the Higher Education and Science Act (Prawo o szkolnictwie wyzszym i nauce) provides that the rector's scholarship (stypendium rektora) may go to a student for outstanding academic results, or scientific or artistic achievement, or sporting achievement in competition at least at national level. It is capped at no more than 10% of students on a given degree programme. A first-year student admitted in the year of their school-leaving exam who is a medallist of a Polish Championship-level competition (or an international olympiad laureate) qualifies and is not counted against that 10%. Each university sets its own amount and its own points table for sport - at the University of Warsaw the eligible sports are Olympic and Paralympic disciplines with a Polish federation, or sports contested at the Academic Polish Championships run by AZS. (2) Elite-athlete money from the Ministry of Sport and Tourism under Art. 32, 32a, 32b and 32c of the Sport Act: the ministry's own page states these may be granted to an athlete who is a member of the national team of a Polish sports association, with applications submitted by the Polish federation. That is not a university scholarship at all. Local authorities may additionally fund their own periodic sports scholarships under Art. 31 of the Sport Act, with conditions set by council resolution, which is why a city or voivodeship stipend often matters more than anything a university pays. AZS (Akademicki Zwiazek Sportowy), the student sports body - its own site gives about 70,000 members, 165 clubs and roughly 2,500 sections - runs the Academic Polish Championships but publishes no scholarship programme of its own.
What it is worth
Rector's scholarship: set per university, not nationally. Verified figure: University of Warsaw, 1,200 PLN/month for 2025/2026, paid for 9 months (October to June) - about 10,800 PLN, roughly 2,500 EUR, for the academic year. This is living-cost money, not tuition: full-time study in Polish at a public university is already free for Polish and EU/EEA citizens and their resident family members. The statutory combined ceiling for stypendium socjalne plus stypendium rektora together is 3,560.60 PLN/month for 2025/2026 (Ministry of Science), and no more than 60% of a university's benefits pool may go to rector's scholarships. Ministry of Sport elite scholarships are set as multiples of a statutory base under the Minister of Sport and Tourism regulation of 20 December 2024; we could not load the regulation text, so we state no zloty figures for them - and they are closed to foreigners in any case.
The formal limits
Rector's scholarship: maximum 10% of students per degree programme, with first-year Polish-Championship medallists and olympiad laureates outside that quota (if a programme has fewer than 10 students, one may receive it); sporting achievement must be at national level or above; social plus rector combined capped at 3,560.60 PLN/month in 2025/2026; total entitlement to student benefits runs 12 semesters (14 for 11-12 semester long-cycle master's programmes). There is no scholarship-count limit per sport, no headcount or equivalency system, and no NCAA-style eligibility clock. Ministry of Sport scholarships require membership of a Polish national team; Team 100 is restricted to ages 16-17 (Junior) and 18-23, nominated by a Polish federation or the Institute of Sport.
Can an international athlete get it?
Yes for the rector's scholarship. The Ministry of Science states that all foreign students who took up studies in Poland in the 2019/2020 academic year are entitled to apply for it, and Gdansk University of Technology states plainly that a student from abroad may apply for the rector's scholarship 'na takich samych zasadach jak studenci - obywatele Polski' - on the same terms as Polish citizens. The social scholarship (stypendium socjalne) is by contrast restricted to listed categories of foreigners (permanent residence, EU long-term resident, refugee, C1 Polish certificate, Card of the Pole, family of a Polish citizen and similar), so a Spanish teenager arriving on a study permit would normally have the rector's scholarship route only. Tuition-free study in Polish at a public university is open to EU/EEA citizens. The Ministry of Sport's elite scholarships and Team 100 are closed: the ministry requires membership of a Polish national team.
Is university the pathway here?
University sport is not the elite pathway in Poland. The pathway is club basketball plus the Szkola Mistrzostwa Sportowego (sports championship school) system at secondary level, with a senior club contract alongside study. AZS clubs are genuinely competitive in some cities, but the university does not recruit or fund a roster the way a US programme does, and no Polish university offers a place plus funding to a 16- or 17-year-old on the strength of a recruiting visit. Money follows results already achieved, not potential.
Worth knowing
- The current ministerial sports-scholarship instrument is the Minister of Sport and Tourism regulation of 20 December 2024, cited on the ministry's own scholarship page. Older press figures for ministerial scholarships come from the previous multiplier table and should not be treated as current - but they are irrelevant to a foreign player, who cannot access this money at all.
- Rector's scholarship amounts and sport points tables are set annually by each rector, so the University of Warsaw figure tells you nothing about another university. Ask the specific university for its current ordinance and its sport points table.
- The rector's scholarship does not offset tuition. English-taught programmes at Polish public universities are fee-paying even for EU citizens; only Polish-language full-time study is free.
- Sport is one of four grounds for the rector's scholarship and competes with academic results for the same 10% of places. A player with national-level results but weak grades is not guaranteed anything.
- The zloty values of ministerial sports scholarships. The multiplier table in the 20 December 2024 regulation and the value of the statutory 'podstawa' in Art. 32 of the Sport Act are unverified: the Dziennik Ustaw and Sejm ELI servers refused our connections and the ISAP page served a CAPTCHA. Any specific PLN figure for ministerial scholarships, including previously circulated ones, should be treated as unconfirmed. This money is closed to foreigners regardless.
- Whether the commonly quoted 900-1,500 PLN/month national range for rector's scholarships is accurate. We verified one university only (1,200 PLN at the University of Warsaw). We removed the range from the record because we could not source it.
- Team 100 award values in PLN, the sports covered, and whether team-sport basketball players are in practice nominated - the Institute of Sport page gives age brackets and the nomination route but no amounts or sport list.
- The SMS (Szkola Mistrzostwa Sportowego) route for girls' basketball: cost to families, boarding arrangements, and whether non-Polish players are admitted. We could not load the relevant school site and state no specifics.
- How many Polish universities award meaningful rector's-scholarship points for basketball as opposed to individual Olympic sports - each points table is set locally and we sampled only one.
