Sweden

Sweden's elite-sport school system (RIG and NIU, with two national basketball RIGs) is genuinely serious about the sport, but it pays out in coaching, boarding support and timetable, not scholarships — and university 'elite sport' status buys adapted studies, never money.

MarginalDual-career support, not money

How it works

At upper secondary (gymnasium) level there are two tiers. RIG (Riksidrottsgymnasium) has national recruitment with first-hand admission, and Riksidrottsforbundet's page states RIG students receive inackorderingsstod (accommodation support); RF also distributes state grants to the providers, and the social-care requirements on a RIG are higher than on an NIU because the RIG carries responsibility for housing as well as sport and studies. NIU (Nationellt godkand idrottsutbildning) has local/regional admission: RF's page states that if the student does not live in the NIU locality, first-hand admission is not guaranteed unless the home and provider municipalities have a voluntary co-operation agreement. Both tiers add the subject specialidrott, which can be read up to 700 gymnasium points. RF proposes RIG designations to Skolverket, which takes the final decision for both RIG and NIU. For basketball specifically, the Swedish Basketball Federation runs the gymnasium application: there are two basketball RIGs — Lulea (Lulea Gymnasieskola) and Norrkoping (Haga Gymnasiet) — plus NIU basketball at a number of schools around the country. RIG applications run 1 September to 15 October, NIU 1 September to 1 December, with decisions announced 15-31 January and all applicants notified by 31 January. Selection assesses sport-specific knowledge and skills, sports psychology, social competence, organisational ability, academic ambition, and health/lifestyle — and the federation states that assessed development potential matters more than previous basketball performance. At higher-education level, RF designates Riksidrottsuniversitet (RIU) and Elitidrottsvanliga larosaten (EVL) for the 2026-2030 cycle: the six RIU are Halmstad/Malmo, GIH/KTH, Chalmers, Goteborgs universitet, Mittuniversitetet and Umea. Applying to a RIU or EVL place requires an intyg (certificate) from the relevant national sport federation. RF's page describes adapted studies and development support and makes no mention of scholarships or direct financial support at all.

What it is worth

For a Swedish or EU/EEA student the value is cost avoided plus in-kind support. Skolverket states that education in gymnasieskolan must as a starting point be free of charge: students must be given textbooks, other learning materials and learning tools without cost, and no fee may be charged for an admission application. The exceptions are narrow — tools the student keeps as personal property, and technology costs for students taking an entire programme by distance learning. RIG additionally carries inackorderingsstod for students who relocate, though RF's page names the benefit without quantifying it. Note that free school meals are NOT guaranteed at gymnasium level: Skolverket states this depends on what the student's home municipality decides. University tuition is free for EU/EEA/Swiss citizens. For non-EU citizens, Stockholm University (page last updated 2 December 2025) charges SEK 90,000 per year for humanities, social sciences and law and SEK 140,000 per year for sciences, with some collaborative programmes in between, plus a SEK 900 application fee per semester application, and states students should budget at least SEK 11,214 per month for living costs. Stockholm University's and the Swedish Institute's scholarships are for master's students from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland who are required to pay tuition fees. None of this is athletic money.

The formal limits

No national athletic-aid framework, so no scholarship caps, counts or equivalency rules exist. The real limits are structural: NIU is a local/regional intake, so an out-of-locality applicant is not guaranteed first-hand admission unless a municipal co-operation agreement exists; specialidrott is capped at 700 gymnasium points; only two basketball RIGs exist nationally (Lulea and Norrkoping); and both RIU and EVL admission require a certificate from the relevant national sport federation, meaning the Swedish Basketball Federation must vouch for an athlete before a university grants elite-athlete study adaptations. RF proposes, but Skolverket decides which programmes exist.

Can an international athlete get it?

For an EU/EEA citizen: university tuition is free, and Swedish gymnasium education is fee-free as a matter of Skolverket's rules. But access is not the same as fee-freedom, and this is the weakest-evidenced part of the picture. Neither RF's pages nor the Swedish Basketball Federation's gymnasium page says anything at all about foreign or international applicants — a silence a family should treat as 'ask, do not assume'. NIU's local/regional intake design means a relocating student is not guaranteed first-hand admission; RIG's national recruitment plus accommodation support is the more realistic route for someone moving. We were NOT able to verify, from any Skolverket page that loaded, the precise basis on which a non-resident EU citizen acquires a right to a Swedish gymnasium place, so no claim about folkbokforing (population registration) is made here. At university level, tuition is free for EU/EEA/Swiss citizens; a non-EU athlete pays full fees and will find no athletic scholarship to offset them, only academic ones aimed at fee-paying master's students. The RIU/EVL federation-certificate requirement is a further practical hurdle for an athlete not already inside the Swedish federation's system.

Is university the pathway here?

University sport is not the elite pathway. The pathway is club-based — junior club into the top women's division — with RIG and NIU as the school-hours training layer feeding it. RIU/EVL exists so an athlete already competing at national level can finish a degree without her sport destroying it: it is a retention and dual-career instrument, not a recruitment one, and RF's page describes it purely in terms of adapted studies and development support. The competitive centre of gravity is the club, not the campus.

Worth knowing

  • RF's RIU/EVL page describes adapted studies and development support and contains no mention of scholarships or financial support. Presenting RIU or EVL status as a 'scholarship' would be wrong.
  • RIG carries inackorderingsstod (accommodation support) but RF's page does not quantify it and we could not verify an amount from a primary source. Do not quote a figure.
  • NIU's local/regional intake is the single biggest practical obstacle for a relocating family: RF states first-hand admission is not guaranteed for a student who does not live in the NIU locality, absent a voluntary municipal co-operation agreement.
  • Gymnasium is fee-free, but Skolverket states school meals at gymnasium level are not guaranteed and depend on the home municipality — a real line item for a boarding teenager.
  • Skolverket notes independent international schools may charge reasonable tuition to cover legitimate additional costs; the fee-free rule applies to the ordinary gymnasium system.
  • The RIU/EVL designation list is for the 2026-2030 cycle — check the current designation before relying on any older list.
  • CORRECTION TO EARLIER RESEARCH: the Swedish Basketball Federation's gymnasium page does NOT list NIU towns. The earlier list (Umea, Ostersund, Uppsala, Taby, Solna, Stockholm, Sodertalje, Huskvarna, Nassjo, Kalmar, Boras, Goteborg, Helsingborg, Malmo, Lund) is not supported by that source and has been removed.
  • CORRECTION TO EARLIER RESEARCH: the claim that RF routes conditional financial help through national federations is not on RF's RIU/EVL page. That page mentions no financial support of any kind.
What we could not confirm
  • The value of RIG inackorderingsstod in SEK. RF names the benefit but not the amount, and we could not reach a primary source that quantifies it.
  • The exact number of Elitidrottsvanliga larosaten for 2026-2030. RF's page describes 15 but the institutions we could enumerate from it numbered 16; the six RIU are firm, the EVL count is not.
  • The basis on which a non-resident EU citizen acquires a right to a place in a Swedish gymnasium, and therefore whether she can be admitted to a basketball RIG or NIU at all. The earlier research attributed a folkbokforing/residence requirement to Skolverket; the Skolverket pages we tried on right-to-education returned 404 and we could not verify it, so the claim has been removed rather than restated.
  • Whether the Swedish Institute's full scholarships are restricted to a defined country list. Stockholm University's page confirms only that they target fee-paying non-EU/EEA/Swiss master's students.
  • The number of basketball places per year at each RIG and NIU, and whether the two RIGs take girls' and boys' cohorts equally.
  • Whether Swedish top-division women's clubs pay junior or first-year players, and any import or foreign-player limits. Not corroborated from federation regulations.
  • Whether the Swedish Basketball Federation will issue the RIU/EVL certificate to a player not developed inside the Swedish system.
