The route Leticia Romero took into university basketball

Guard

Spanish

Athlavia had no involvement with Leticia Romero. She has not used this product, is not connected to it and has not endorsed it. Everything on this page about her is drawn from the published sources listed at the foot, and cited so you can read the originals. The sentences about what an association’s rules permit are ours; they are statements about a rulebook, they are marked as such where they appear, and they are not about her.

No photograph. Roster images belong to the universities and photographers who made them.

The route Leticia Romero took, drawn as the levels she played at, in the order her sources place them.
Before university: Spain. Her sources describe this in words, not as a level.
Stop 1: Kansas State University, NCAA Division I.
Stop 2: Florida State University, NCAA Division I.

Two stops, both NCAA Division I. The line is flat because the level did not change, not because nothing happened. 14 of the 108 women documented here followed the same sequence of levels.

Left to right is the order the sources place her stops in. It is not a time axis: 54 of the 181 stops recorded across this site carry a bare pair of dates and the rest are prose, so the years are printed as written, in the list below.

The rows are the NCAA’s own three divisions, plus two dashed rows for everything outside them. NAIA and U SPORTS are separate associations rather than a lower NCAA tier, and nothing in these records ranks them against it; the two-year colleges sit at the foot because a junior college is an institution players transfer on from, which the records do say. The shaded bar behind each row is how many of the 110 routes documented here include a stop at that level.

The stops, as the sources record them

Printed as written. The drawing above compresses these; this list does not, because every caveat in the research lives inside these sentences.

What these levels are, and what money can exist at them

These are facts about rulebooks. They apply to everyone at that level, and none of them is a statement about her.

NCAA Division I

This association permits athletic scholarships. Whether any particular player received one, and how much of one, is not published.

What the rules actually say at NCAA Division I

Where she was before she left

Aguimes, Gran Canaria. She was already playing in Spain's top division with CB Islas Canarias from age 15, three seasons averaging 8.4 points, and appeared in the EuroCup, before leaving for the United States.

What happened, in the sources’ account

Romero is the clearest published case of a player choosing college over an already-running Liga Femenina career. She had three seasons in Spain's top tier behind her when she went to Kansas State, where she averaged 14.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.0 assists as a freshman and made the second team All-Big 12. After a coaching change she sought a transfer; ESPN's contemporaneous account records that Kansas State eventually released her from her commitment and that the NCAA granted her eligibility mid-season in December. She spent the rest of her college career at Florida State, earning second team All-ACC in 2014-15.

What is known about money

Athletic scholarships are permitted at every level on this route. That is a fact about the rulebook, not about her.

No source we fetched states what she received, if anything.

6 of the 110 routes documented here have a source stating any financial term at all. The other 104 do not, and that is normal rather than a gap in the research: a university announces a signing as a roster addition, and what a player was offered stays between her and the programme. Read silence as silence.

What our researchers found about money

No source states anything about money.

Copied without editing. Like the checking notes further down, some of these sentences are instructions to the person writing this page rather than statements about her.

No source I fetched states a scholarship amount, percentage or any financial term. The documented mechanism is an NCAA waiver granting her eligibility after the transfer - a rules decision, not a financial one.

What happened since

Drafted 16th overall by the Connecticut Sun in the 2017 WNBA draft; signed by the Dallas Wings in June 2018. Professionally with ZVVZ USK Praha (2017-2019, Czech league title 2018) and Valencia Basket from 2019, winning the 2021 EuroCup. With Spain: Olympic silver in 2016, World Championship silver in 2014, EuroBasket gold in 2017 and bronze in 2015.

No retrieval date is stored against these sources, so treat anything time-sensitive — a current club, a current roster — as needing a fresh check.

Athlavia’s note on this route

Everything above is drawn from the sources. This is our editorial judgement about why the route is worth showing, and it is the only opinion on this page.

Two hard truths sit inside this story. One: the college route can be taken instead of, not only before, a professional contract at home - and it did not cost her the national team. Two: the transfer episode showed publicly that a player's release and her eligibility can depend on decisions made by the university and the NCAA, not only by her. That is worth understanding before anyone signs anything.

She is an outlier. Read her next to the junior-college and Division II routes rather than as the benchmark.

This set has not been through the balancing pass, so it may over-represent Division I.

What we could not confirm

These are the checking pass’s own notes, copied without editing. They address the person writing this page, which is why some are phrased as instructions. They are published because a list of what we removed is worth more than an assurance that we checked.

What the second pass removed or corrected

  • CORRECTED: the previous draft said she became Florida State's first three-time All-American. Nothing I fetched supports that. Wikipedia records second team All-ACC in 2014-15. Do not publish the All-American claim without a source.
  • CORRECTED: the previous draft said she 'played the 2018 WNBA season with the Dallas Wings'. Wikipedia says she was signed by the Wings in June 2018. Say signed, not played a full season, unless verified.

What is still unknown

  • The unfetched Kansas State and Florida State roster URLs from the previous draft have been removed rather than carried forward unverified.
  • She is an elite outlier. Use her for the club-versus-college contrast, and say plainly in the copy that this is not the typical route.
  • Her professional career has continued past 2021 - do not present the club list as current.

Researcher’s own rating: 92 out of 100. This is the checking agent’s self-assessment, not a measurement. Across the 110 records it runs from 62 to 93, so the source count above it tells you more.
